Jewelry Care 101: How to Make Your Favorite Pieces Last a Lifetime

Jewelry is more than an accessory, it’s an expression of who you are. A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your pieces beautiful for years to come.

At Darling Devotion, our mission is to create jewelry that lasts, both in quality and style. Here’s everything you need to know about protecting, cleaning, and storing your hypoallergenic jewelry.

We wanted to create an informative place for you to learn how to take care of all your existing jewelry (no matter the metals it’s made of), and your future jewelry from Darling Devotion.

1. Know What Your Jewelry Is Made Of

Different metals have different care needs.

Titanium & 316L Stainless Steel: These are water-resistant, tarnish-resistant, and hypoallergenic - making them low-maintenance and perfect for everyday wear.

Gold Vermeil & Gold-Plated Pieces: Avoid long exposure to water, sweat, or perfume. These can break down the plating layer over time.

Sterling Silver: Tarnishes naturally with air exposure, so regular polishing helps maintain its shine.

Tip: When in doubt, treat your jewelry gently. Even the strongest metals benefit from mindful wear.

2. Keep Jewelry Away From Harsh Chemicals

Everyday products can be surprisingly harsh on metals and finishes.
Avoid contact with:

Perfume, hairspray, and lotions

Household cleaning products

Chlorine and saltwater

These chemicals can cause dullness, corrosion, or fading over time, especially for gold-plated or coated pieces.

Tip: Put on your jewelry last when getting ready, and take it off first when winding down.

3. Store Jewelry Properly

Tossing everything together in a jewelry box can lead to scratches, tangles, and tarnish.

Here’s how to keep your collection organized and protected:

Store pieces separately in soft pouches or compartments

Keep them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight

Use anti-tarnish strips or silica gel packets for silver jewelry

Tip: Traveling? Use a compact jewelry case with divided sections to prevent tangling and damage on the go.

4. Clean Your Jewelry Gently

Regular cleaning keeps your jewelry looking brand new with no fancy products needed.

For Stainless Steel or Titanium: Mix mild soap with warm water and gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Pat dry with a microfiber cloth.

For Gold-Plated Jewelry: Use a damp cloth only (no scrubbing). Avoid soaking.

For Sterling Silver: Use a silver polishing cloth or gentle silver cleaner occasionally.

Tip: Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless the jewelry specifically states it’s safe as they can loosen stones or damage coatings.

5. Remove Jewelry During High-Impact Activities

Even durable metals appreciate a little downtime.
Take off your jewelry when:

Working out or swimming

Cleaning or gardening

Sleeping (especially with delicate chains or earrings)

Tip: Keep a small dish or tray near your sink and bed so you always have a safe spot to store your jewelry.

6. Make It a Habit

Jewelry care isn’t about perfection, it’s about consistency.
Take a few seconds each week to wipe down your jewelry, check for loose parts, and store it properly. Those small habits can add up to years of extra wear.
